Fortune Vivo – India’s First Diabetes Care Oil – A Review

By Arpita Mukherjee

Can type 2 diabetes be controlled with cooking oil? According to Adani Wilmar Ltd, its latest cooking oil of the Fortune brand, Vivo is capable of reducing the high blood sugar level. The oil, which is being marketed as a revolutionary product for diabetes control, is expected to benefit diabetics and people who have a higher risk of developing diabetes.

Although there is a strong genetic link to type 2 diabetes, it is also considered as a lifestyle disease. A large number of studies have demonstrated the association between unhealthy lifestyle and type 2 diabetes. A diet rich in sugar and fats leads to unintended weight gain. Excess body fat increases resistance to insulin, which hinders glucose uptake in the body cells, leading to increase in the sugar level in the blood. Fortune Vivo is a blend of healthy oils that according to studies can help in modifying the underlying cause of insulin resistance, thereby helping in type 2 diabetes management.

Fortune Vivo is a blend of rice bran oil and sesame seed oil (80% rice bran oil and 20% sesame oil). Although both rice bran oil and sesame seed oil are individually used for cooking, this is the first time you get a combination of both the oils.

All fats are not created equal. A diet rich in saturated fats and trans fats are blamed for increasing the triglycerides, LDL and total cholesterol levels in the blood, whereas healthy unsaturated fats help in maintaining the normal lipid balance. Therefore, when it comes to selecting cooking oil, oils rich in mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids such as olive oil, mustard oil, sesame seed oil and rice bran oil are the preferred choices of the health conscious people. Notwithstanding the individual benefits of the healthy oils, the combination of healthy oils, because of synergistic effect, probably offers greater benefits than when the oils are used separately.

Fortune Vivo contains unrefined sesame oil. According to a small study reported in the journal Clinical Nutrition (Edinburgh, Scotland) in 2011, sesame oil works synergistically with anti-diabetic drug glibenclamide. Compared with monotherapy, combination treatment with sesame oil and glibenclamide caused 36% reduction in the blood glucose level and 43% reduction in hemoglobin A1C level.

To retain all the essential nutrients including oryzanol, vitamin E and phytosterols, rice bran oil present in Fortune Vivo has been refined through the novel degumming process. In a small study published in the July 2012 issue of the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition, researchers have shown that consumption of rice bran oil helps in lowering the LDL cholesterol level in type 2 diabetes patients. However, it had no effect on insulin resistance.

What to expect

The rice bran oil-sesame oil combination no doubt is a healthy cooking oil option. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to establish the benefit of the oil blend in controlling diabetes. You can add the healthy oil blend in moderation to your diet. However, don't go overboard. Even healthy oil loses its effectiveness when it is consumed in large amounts and used for preparing deep fried foods.
